Prologue:
I took this trip in 2009 when Spanair was still operating and had its own VIP lounge that was used by other *A members (Nowadays this lounge is the Puerta de Alcala)..I arrived at T2 and made my way to Spanair's tkt counter through a series of escalator and elevator rides. The J counter was manned by two ladies and the agent printed my boarding pass quickly. She showed me the location of the VIP lounge (nowadays the Puerta de Alcala) and wished me a good trip. Going through security was quick and soon I was on my way to the lounge.

A nostalgic picture.
Seat pitch was a bit tight but service was friendly and attentive. Cold packaged towels were passed while we were sitting at the gate and pre-dept. drinks in glasses were offered. At first there was water OJ and sparkling wine on the trays but psgs could order anything they wanted. Afterwards magazines and newspapers in Spanish English and German were distributed. The only minor flaw is the lack of proactive coat hanging. Otherwise the crew was outstanding with a great attitude and professional demeanor.
After take off the purser took the drink orders and served two packages of peanuts w/dried fruits to each psgr. There was a hot meal but no choice. It was a steak entree with potatoes a side salad with two chunks of cheese and a custard dessert. The steak was a bit bland but the quantity was very adequate. Furthermore the FA passed around with the bread basket about 3 times. Glasses were refilled and refreshed everytime which was very nice.

ReplyThanks Adan for posting such an old TR. Always great to see a nostalgic piece ! The meat sounded nice;)
I'm glad that I was able to fly JK at that time. A friend of mine took them in J about a year later and reported that they were not doing hot meals in J anymore. Apparently the cost cutting was becoming evident.
ReplyAlways nice to see an old fashioned TR ! Gracias Amigo !
As avgeeks we tend to treasure every airline experience, especially of those carriers that are no longer with us. My only regret is that I have not started this hobby earlier and recorded the flights that I had with Pan Am, Eastern, Air Florida, TWA, Piedmont, BMI and one or two others that I do not recall now.
Thankfully I was able to save a few pics when I traveled with Sabena and Malev and those were in J back then, so not everything is lost. .
ReplyLovely meal, a well written report. Thank you Adan.
Thanks for visiting as always.
ReplyHey, I took them once back in 2011. Thanks buddy.
Wow just before they liquidated in Jan. 2012. At least you had a chance to fly them and have some memories of it.
ReplyThank you Adan for this old TR.
Good lounge.
Oh my good the meal !
It looks so good !
Cool to try Spanair before the end :(
Yes, so happy that I had the chance to try this airline. No regrets from this avgeek.
The look was very decent indeed.
Thank you.
ReplyThanks for sharing this TR
The lounge spread is very poor
On board the legroom is tight but the FAs were profesional
The meal is not appetizing
Nice memories from a dead company
See you soon
Back then I guess they could get away with just serving packaged goods and cookies. Overall lounge food has improved even in the US although it is not quite up there yet.
I think the meal was not bad. I love cheese and flan so that could be my subjective bias. ;)
We keep thing alive through memories.
Au revoir et merci.
ReplyThank you Adan for this Discovery of spanair!
A beautiful archive of this defunct airline.
Thank you for sharing with us.
i guess I like nostalgia and I'm sure others do as well. It was my pleasure.
Thanks.
